Study Guide The study guide is optional for students to fill out. However, this may be useful in guiding student reading and helping with discussions in class.
_
Working in a small group, you and your partner will create a
presentation on one of the topics listed below.Your job will be to research the assigned topic and make a
decision on what information might be relevant for the rest of the class to
know.Keep in mind, you should be
thinking about how your information might be relevant to the topic of the
novel.Literature is often greatly
influenced by the time period in which it was written. These presentations will be helpful in
understanding and decoding the text.
2.Informational slides that present relevant
information about the who, what, where, when, why, and how of your topic.Try to stick to big picture
information.There is no limit to
the number of slides you should/can have, however, you should not have more
than 30 words per slide.
3.You may NOT read from your slides, so note cards
are a requirement for your topic.Your slides should simply abbreviate the important points of your
information so that people can take notes. You will be penalized for lengthy amounts of
information on slides.No
paragraphs.
4.Your presentation should contain at least one
picture per slide.
5.Your final slide should be “the big 3.”This will be a slide with the 3 most
important facts for your presentation.
6.You must provide a properly formatted
bibliography at the end of the presentation.
Use your best judgment on this presentation. You should consider your facts and
sources carefully and present a well-rounded presentation. There is no time limit or slide
limit.

Psychology Article
_Follow the link [Freud, Civilization and its Discontents, 1930 (excerpt)].
Sigmund Freud explored the role of civilization in helping individuals
to control their destructive urges and impulses. Read the excerpt from
this 1930 text describing the destructive behaviors of humans and how
these can be channeled.
In your group, discuss the following:
* Do humans have a drive towards self destruction?
* Where is destructive behavior evident today?
* How do individuals/society deal with humans' destructive impulses?
* How does Id, Ego, and Super Ego apply to the story?
Character analysis
For this project, you will need to complete several tasks. Task one will be to create a CD with your top 10 favorite songs. These songs should not necessarily be your favorite simply because you like the way they sound, but because they are songs that speak about you as a person...in this case, the lyrics are more important than the notes.
For the second part of the project, you will need to write a 1-5 page paper that describes you with at least 5 adjectives. How and why do these words describe you? Be sure to provide examples as to why you picked each of these words. Please be sure to print your name on the paper, but do not write your name on the CD.
We will be using these papers in a little exercise about character analysis. We will be creating a pre and post analysis paper about the songs and the "personal profiles" in class.
_There are four major themes in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
* Dual Nature or Split Personality
* Reason Versus the Supernatural
* Limits of Scientific Experimentation
* The Effects of Society on the Individual
Respond to two of the following thematic prompts:
How can a person engage in both positive and negative behaviors?Write about a time that you expressed kindness towards another and a time that you were cruel and/or unkind.Analyze why you might have acted these opposite ways at different times. What causes a person to act radically opposite ways and what does this suggest about human personality or human nature?
List and discuss three things you know are true. How do you know they are true? Then list and discuss three things you think are true. How could you find out if they are true or not?
What limits should be placed on scientific experimentation? What types of experimentation/exploration should science engage in?What types should they avoid? Why should science avoid these particular things?
What kind of positive effects does society have on the individual? What kind of negative effects does it have? What happens to people when they are not restricted by social convention?
Final Paper
We will be using a YouTube video as the inspiration for our final paper. Watch a mash-up of current music with clips from a Jekyll and Hyde movie. There are a lot of universal themes in J&H that can be applied to themes in current music. Read through the Jekyll & Hyde Final Paper to get ideas and examples of what to expect.
Pay special attention to the paper requirements. Song lyrics must be included with the final paper. Also, you may wish to take a look at Identifying Theme Handout to ensure you are thoroughly and properly making connections.
Once you have finished writing your paper, we will spend one day in class working on revisions. Please use the Editing Checklist and have AT LEAST 2 other people complete revisions on your paper. You must turn in 2 editing checklists with your final paper. Remember, you should be identifying and connecting the themes of the novel to music.
