Serious Poetry Interpretation uses any published poetry
selection, including lyric novels with literary merit and appropriate to the
reader. (Published means the speech has an ISBN # or Library of Congress #). The
mood is essentially serious.
Rules – Selection:
The
mood of the cutting must be essentially serious.
Selections
for poetry may be one poem or several poems
Appropriateness
of the selection to the interpreter and audience should be considered.
A copy
of the script must be filed with the Contest Manager before each contest.
Updated
copies of the script must be submitted at Subsection, Section, and State
levels.
At the
State Contest, the student must submit a copy of the script to the Room
Manager in the first round.
Rules – Performance:
The
student should get and give meaning through the use of vocal and bodily
expression.
Poise
in vocal and physical delivery are expected.
The
use of gestures is optional.
The
use of a script is optional, provided it is not used as a prop.
THE
MAXIMUM TIME OF PRESENTATION, INCLUDING THE REQUIRED INTRODUCTION, IS
EIGHT (8) MINUTES.
