YouTube is a powerful search engine for the young and old alike. The popularity of this search engine only continues to grow. Read the recent Washington Post Article about YouTube and discuss why YouTube is such a growing trend and whether or not it will go away any time soon.
Learning Project
Since YouTube is an increasing source of knowledge, your task will be to learn a new skill from YouTube. Pick from the following list of skills and pick one that you would like to learn from YouTube. There are hundreds, if not thousands of videos on all of these topics, so check out several and decide on one that you want to demonstrate before the entire class:
1. Learn how to juggle.
2. Learn how to tie a tie.
3. Learn a dance (can be with a partner and should not be a line dance).
4. Learn how to play a song on an ipad garageband instrument (guitar and piano work best).
5. Learn how to twirl your pen around your thumb.
6. Learn how to perform a magic trick (not with cards).
7. Learn how to fold an origami animal (you can pick what kind of animal).
8. Learn how to perform two different card tricks.
These projects will be graded on effort. While you will not be expected to master the task, you will be expected to show the very basics of a skill. We will be demonstrating the skills in class.
You will also need to take a short video of yourself performing one of the above tasks in the event that you have intermittent success (you can't always make it work). You should be able to have someone else take some video using your iPad or by propping the iPad up and taking the video yourself.
Pay very close attention to the various videos that you find on your topic. Each video may choose to "teach" you in a different way. Take note of the ways that help you best as you will be creating your own video in the near future.
Lastly, when you find a video that serves as your inspiration (the easiest video for you to understand) be sure to bookmark the link so you can post it to your website.
FINAL PRODUCT: Demonstrate to the class your ability to perform one of the above tasks using a video from YouTube.
Teaching Project
Now that you have had a chance to use YouTube to learn a new skill, you are going to contribute to the YouTube world. You are going to create your very own YouTube video that will showcase a talent or skill that you can teach others. You do not have to pick a skill that is difficult to perform; maybe you can do a skateboard trick, draw anime, maybe you know how to pass the first level of Mario in under a minute, or maybe it is as simple as baking the perfect cookie.
You will need to create a short video for YouTube that introduces to the viewer what the purpose of your video is (not for class, but that you are going to teach something). Then, you will need to create a step-by-step video. Be sure to plan out a script ahead of time and consider all of the props you may need in order to make your video work. There is no time requirement on the video, but someone will be taking your video from class to see if they can follow the steps. Be sure that you think through everything.
You will need to create: 1. A step-by-step set of instructions (to be turned in with the final video). 2. A YouTube account to post your video. 3. A video with a clear introduction and conclusion. 4. Clear and concise step-by-step instructions to help the viewer. 5. A demonstration or visual of the finished product. 6. Your voice should walk the viewers through the video
NOTE: You do not need to appear in the video if you don't want to. You can crop videos so they do not show a face.
